Adam Richards secured his 6th Headland Men’s Club Championship in fading light yesterday, after outlasting Ben Duncombe in a (not so) sudden-death play-off that saw them play the 18th hole in front of scores of spectators eight times!
The play-off hole proved to be very difficult, with neither playing managing to make a birdie. The first seven holes were all halved with pars (5 times) and bogeys (twice). On his 26th hole of the day, Adam’s par was enough, as Ben failed to get up-and-down from off the back of the green.
Adam (with rounds of 77.79.71.77) and Ben (77.75.74.78) finished the regulation 72 holes on 304.
It was not so close in B Grade, with the one-handed putter Gary Marr (83.84.82.90 – 339) cruising to victory by 7 strokes from Darren Walters.
C Grade was also a tight affair though, with first-round leader Jack Lambalk (85.98.96.95 – 374) holding on to win by a solitary stroke from John Cleary.
Wayne West – in his first year of eligibility won the Seniors Championship, and finished 5th overall. Wayne shot a very respectable four rounds of 80.74.81.79 – 314.
132 Members contested the Men’s Club Championship this year, with the event again sponsored by Tim Reed’s NeuBau Group.
